250+ products in one container for a Thimphu mini-mart

Challenge

The buyer’s list ran to hundreds of different products: drinks, instant food, snacks, household cleaning, personal care, even pet food. No single Thai supplier carries a range like that, and each factory or wholesaler sets its own minimum order quantities. Ordering brand by brand would have meant dozens of small, expensive shipments.

Bhutan adds a second constraint. The country has no seaport, so cargo lands at Kolkata and travels overland to Phuentsholing. Freight, insurance and clearing costs are largely fixed per container, which makes a part-empty box the most expensive way to ship.

Solution

aBit Trading handled the order as one consolidated consignment:

• A quotation the buyer could edit. We priced the full wish list, then worked through it together line by line over chat: photos to confirm the right variant, pack sizes checked, quantities trimmed or cancelled until the list fit one container.
• Sourcing at retail quantities. We bought against the final list from suppliers across our network. Anything that turned out to be out of stock was struck from the bill and declared to customs as not shipped, so the buyer paid only for what was on board.
• Consolidation and inspection. Everything was collected at our Bangkok warehouse and checked against the order before packing.
• A packing plan that used the whole box. Dense drink cartons hit a container’s weight ceiling long before its volume is used, so lighter goods filled the space above, and bulky lines like toilet tissue were repacked out of their cartons so no space shipped as air.
• One documentation set. A single commercial invoice, packing list, marine insurance policy and bill of lading covered the whole order, with the export entry filed at Laem Chabang. When the buyer added an 85-inch television days before loading, it went in with its own customs declaration.
• The corridor. The container sailed from Laem Chabang to Kolkata on a direct service. Our appointed clearing agent handled port clearance and the in-bond transit to Phuentsholing under the India–Bhutan trade, commerce and transit agreement, and our Bhutan team walked the buyer through duties and permit fees line by line, paid online from Thimphu.

Figures below come from this shipment’s packing list and shipping file. Every consignment is different, so transit times and container plans are always confirmed per shipment at quotation.

• More than 250 distinct products in 2,582 packages, shipped in a single 40 ft high-cube container.
• 73.5 CBM of catalogued cartons packed into one box, floor to ceiling, by balancing dense drinks against light snacks and repacking bulky lines.
• First enquiry to final order in four weeks of line-by-line refinement; loaded on 18 May 2026 and sailed from Laem Chabang on 23 May on a direct Kolkata service.
• Cleared Bhutan customs at Phuentsholing on 23 June 2026 and carried on to Thimphu, with duties and permit fees settled online the same day.

One purchase order, one container, one set of documents — and a shop shelf in Thimphu stocked with a range no single supplier could have delivered.
