Importing Thai products to Bangladesh takes three things: a valid IRC (import registration certificate) on the Bangladesh side, an agreed bank payment instrument — usually a letter of credit — and a partner on the Thai side who prepares paperwork the way Bangladeshi banks expect it. No bilateral free trade agreement is in force, so nothing in this corridor depends on tariff preferences — the trade runs on standard rates and solid documents. This guide walks through the pieces in plain words; every real shipment’s specifics are confirmed per order. It is practical guidance, not legal advice.
What do you need on the Bangladesh side?
Commercial imports run on a valid IRC, and the current registration procedure is published on the Bangladesh Trade Portal. If you are setting up as an importer, arrange the IRC and a relationship with a C&F agent at your port first — the agent confirms the documentation and duty treatment for your product lines. Requirements change, so verify with the authority or your agent rather than relying on any guide, including this one.
Product rules add a second layer: many food and consumer items sit on the BSTI mandatory-certification list, retail packs need Bangla labelling, and many foods also require a pre-shipment radioactivity certificate. We coordinate the export-side documents these call for; your agent confirms which apply to your specific lines.
How does the letter of credit actually work?
In plain words: your bank issues a letter of credit in favour of the exporter — a promise to pay when the exporter presents documents that match the LC’s terms exactly. Payment moves against paper, not trust, which is why the document set matters more in this corridor than almost anywhere else. Bangladeshi banks scrutinise import paperwork closely, and letter-of-credit and cash-margin rules vary by product category and change often, so we prepare every export document set bank-ready and quote with your payment instrument in mind.
What margin your bank requires, and which instrument suits your order, is between you and your bank — confirm it before you commit, not after. No figures here, deliberately: the rules move, and a guide that quotes them goes stale.
How do goods travel from Thailand to Bangladesh?
The lane runs by sea from Laem Chabang, Thailand’s main deep-sea port, to Chattogram, typically via a regional transshipment hub — indicatively around two weeks’ sailing depending on the connection, with the exact routing, schedule and terms confirmed per shipment. Mongla serves as the secondary gateway.
On the Thai side, aBit Trading consolidates and loads at our own Bangkok warehouse, and everything is checked against your spec sheet before consolidation. Every order is quoted under the Incoterm you prefer — EXW, FOB, CIF or DAP; the plain-words Incoterms guide explains what each term means for who handles which leg.
Is there a Thailand–Bangladesh trade agreement?
Not one you can use. No bilateral free trade agreement is in force today — the ADB’s regional tracker lists a proposed Thailand–Bangladesh FTA still at the consultation stage (ADB ARIC) — so Thai goods enter at standard MFN rates (“most favoured nation” — the normal rate applied where no preferential deal exists), and consumer categories can carry substantial total duties, which is worth factoring into your pricing early. Both countries also sit in the broader BIMSTEC framework, whose trade agreement is not yet concluded. The two governments signed a statement of intent toward free-trade talks in April 2025, but no usable tariff preference exists on any shipment today; this guide’s “Last verified” date shows when the status was last checked.
Do Thai products sell in Bangladesh?
Thai goods have a visible following in Bangladesh: food, drinks, cosmetics and household lines are the categories Thailand’s own trade promotion brings to Dhaka, with the Ministry of Commerce’s Top Thai Brands fair running a 2024 Dhaka edition and a 2026 edition set for 23–25 July. The mass market is served by strong local manufacturers, so the imported segment is premium and brand-led — brought in largely by independent importers and wholesalers rather than the big houses.
One accuracy detail worth knowing before you build an order around a famous name: MAMA noodles, one of the best-known Thai brands in Bangladesh, have been produced locally by Kallol Thai President Foods (BD) Ltd — a joint venture of Bangladesh’s Kallol Group and Thailand’s Thai President Foods whose local production began in January 2013 (risingbd). “Popular Thai brand” and “imported from Thailand” are not always the same thing, and part of scoping an order well is knowing which lines are made locally and which genuinely travel.
Can you start smaller than a full container?
Yes. There is no single site-wide minimum order — minimums are set per supplier and per product, and mixed-SKU consolidation lets smaller lines share one shipment: up to a hundred-plus SKUs in one load where the assortment calls for it. That suits how this market actually buys — several Thai brands at once, in bank-friendly quantities, through one Bangkok partner — and it means a first order can test a portfolio of lines rather than bet on one. How mixed-container consolidation works explains the mechanics.
Common questions
Is halal certification included? Where a manufacturer holds halal certification, the factory’s certificate is passed through with your shipment on request — the same way GMP, HACCP and ISO 22000 certificates are handled. Certificates are the manufacturer’s own; nothing is self-issued.
Do I need a letter of credit for every order? The LC is the standard instrument for commercial imports into Bangladesh, but the rules on instruments and margins vary by category and change often — your bank confirms what applies to your order, and we quote with your payment instrument in mind.
Who clears customs at Chattogram? Your C&F agent, acting for you as the importer of record. The export document set is prepared bank-ready from Bangkok.
